Dental PMS

UI/UX Design and Research for a Multimillion-Dollar PMS Project

Introduction: I was actively involved in a groundbreaking Practice Management Software (PMS) project that aimed to revolutionize the dental industry. Despite its ultimate cancellation, my role as a UI/UX designer and researcher was instrumental in driving the development of the dental charting portion of the application. This challenging endeavor demanded extensive research, constant user feedback, and close collaboration with a dental practice, resulting in a highly functional and user-friendly app.

Project Role: UI/UX Design and Research

Key Responsibility: Research and development of the dental charting portion

Objectives:

  • Streamline and reduce the excessive features of existing dental market applications

  • Create an aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly Practice Management Software (PMS)

  • Introduce modern UI/UX design and considerations to an industry lacking in innovation

Noteworthy Achievements:

Throughout this monumental project, I acquired valuable insights and skills that significantly contributed to my professional growth:

Rapid Acquisition of UI/UX Principles: Despite my limited prior experience, I quickly familiarized myself with a broad range of UI/UX principles, gaining expertise in a short period.

Immersion in Dental Practice Operations: My extensive involvement allowed me to gain a deep understanding of the day-to-day functioning of dental practices, to the point where I could practically function as a dental hygienist.

Simplification of Dental Charting Processes: I successfully tackled the intricacies of dental charting and transformed them into intuitive user flows, simplifying the overall experience for practitioners.

Agile Iteration and Rapid Prototyping: I honed my ability to iterate swiftly and frequently, adapting designs based on user feedback to achieve optimal results.

Proficiency in Wireframing and User Flow Charting: Through hands-on experience, I became adept at creating wireframes and user flow charts, ensuring seamless interactions and logical navigation within the application.

Enhanced Design Skills: This project played a pivotal role in elevating my design skills, boosting my capabilities tenfold and refining my understanding of design principles.

Mockups: Odontogram

In developing this application, the key challenge was creating an MVP with minimal bloat. User feedback played a pivotal role, shaping our decisions. We prioritized adding tools and functions only when they served a clear purpose and enhanced user experience.

Mockups: Periodontal

Designing this application segment was a significant undertaking due to the complexity of condensing vast amounts of data into a single place. Though I initially explored separating information onto different pages, extensive user testing revealed that keeping all the data on one page was essential for seamless workflow. Despite its intricate appearance, this design ensures the best user experience and flow for dental hygienists.

Conclusion:

My involvement in this multimillion-dollar PMS project as a UI/UX designer and researcher was a transformative experience. Through dedicated research, collaboration, and a strong focus on user feedback, I contributed to the creation of a user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing application. With a wealth of knowledge and an ever-evolving understanding of design principles, I am equipped to take on new challenges and drive innovation in the product design field.

Designing these application sections presented their own complexities. A key challenge was maintaining imaging functionality at an MVP level. Striking a balance, we omitted additional modalities and tools to prioritize simplicity while ensuring the end user's functional needs were met.
